St. Nikolai wurde Ende des 19. Jh. im neugotischen Stil errichtet als Ersatz für den beim großen Brand zerstörten Vorgängerbau. Zu der Zeit besaß sie den höchsten Kirchturm der Welt. Im zweiten Weltkrieg diente sie den alliierten Bomberpiloten als Orientierungspunkt und brannte 1943 während des Feuersturms "Operation Gomorrha" aus. Die Ruine ist heute ein Mahnmal für die Opfer von Krieg und Gewaltherrschaft zwischen 1933 und 1945.

St. Nikolai was the neo-gothic replacement of the former church destroyed in the "Great Fire" of Hamburg. Finished 1874, the tower was at this time the hightest building of the world. In WWII, it served as a point of ofirentation for the Allied bomber pilots. In the firestorm of "Operation Gomorrha" 1943 the church burned down.
Today, it serves as memorial for the victims of war and tyranny from 1933 to 1945.
